When a child is newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes we are often very careful to avoid hypoglycemia. Since many of these children will hit a honeymoon period, clinicians usually don’t strive for tight control for months. This seems like the right thing to do. Now, information from new studies published in the Journal of Pediatrics, Pediatric Diabetes and online, point to the need to be a little more aggressive in managing new onset diabetes in children to prevent DKA.
Our intern Alexandria Bartley from the FAMU College of Pharmacy looks at how just one DKA incident in a child can cause lifelong cognitive decline, in our Laterpay feature.
