Last week our intern Marian Ayad, BSPharm, PharmD candidate, University of Colorado, was talking to me about the problems that occur when there is a lower age limit on the use of a medication. She had been reviewing PI’s on various diabetes medications and constantly found that most of them had a minimum age for use.

She was well aware that prescribers can “write off label” but found that they were hesitant when it came to age restrictions.

Usually these age restrictions were in place because the manufacturer had not tested the product in that younger age group, and were not tied to any adverse events.

This week she was able to find a study that looked at the benefits of using liraglutide in a younger population, and the benefits may be enough to make you think about changing your prescribing habits.
