Some 50% to 70% of people spend six or more hours each day sitting, according to 2012 NHANES data, and prolonged sitting is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity, and early mortality. Standing desks are becoming more common as research shows the health risks of too much sitting at work, but too much standing also can be risky, so people should start slowly, only using the desks for up to an hour daily to give their bodies time to adjust.
