Last week I shared some information on saturated fat in my Letter from the Editor from the BMJ. Many of you asked for more information and had some less than complimentary comments on what Dr. Aseem Malhotra, an interventional cardiology specialist at Croydon Hospital in London, had to say. Although most of you agreed with what I and the good doctor said we felt obligated to review the article and provide you with some feedback from others who did not feel that his comments were totally accurate. Checking glucose without having to use blood has always been the holy grail of diabetes care. A few years ago we had some information from an Indian researcher who felt he could do it with tears, and there has also been renewed interest in measuring glucose via the ear lobe. I recently had the opportunity to look at some information from a University of Florida researcher who has developed a process for measuring glucose in tears, and according to early indications his system is patentable. We are trying to help his team gather some feedback on how this type of monitoring would impact frequency, convenience, and diabetes management. If you could share the surveys (in PDF format) with your patients or offer your own feedback as a medical professional we would greatly appreciate it.
