Steve, Andrew and I are back from the 73rd ADA Scientific Sessions in Chicago with lots of great information for you including many studies on current medications either showing improved outcomes or the value of using existing medications in new combinations or strengths. However, most research focused on new drugs and drug classes with plenty of information on GLP-1 and DPP4-I compounds, a new formulation of metformin, and even a new TZD-like compound.

Some classes of drugs are many years away from approval, but a lot of attention was on the SGLT2-I’s (sodium glucose cotransporter 2-inhibitors). Working with my current Doctor of Pharmacy Interns, Cal Courtney, Kori Lawie, and Jordan Mustonen, we have put together a comprehensive newsletter on the latest in SGLT2-I research.

The first in class approved medication is canaglifozin and some significant studies on drug combinations and long term results were presented. We’ve also looked at the only two unapproved compounds that are far enough along in research to report on: empagliflozin, and dapagliflozin.

In addition, we have included one of our popular Homerun Slides sets on how these medications work in the body.
