Data on 1,479 patients with type 2 diabetes and stable coronary disease revealed 24.1% of those who received insulin-providing medications to regulate blood glucose levels developed peripheral arterial disease at 4.6 years, compared with 16.9% in those who took insulin-sensitizing drugs. Researchers also found patients on insulin sensitizers showed reduced rates of amputation, lower-extremity revascularization and low ankle-brachial index than those who received insulin-providing drugs.
