Our newly diagnosed patients receive so much information from friends, family, and the internet that they become desensitized to having diabetes and what that means in real terms. This overload of information and long list of do’s and don’ts can be blamed for many patients just giving up before they even start. This week, we feature the Glycemic Triad Patient Education Tool, which explains blood glucose measurements to patients in an easy-to-understand way while also emphasizing the importance of staying on track.

All of us know that one of the key components of diabetes management is physical activity. However just like patients become desensitized to information, they can also become deconditioned to the idea of physical activity. This week Dr. Sheri Colberg looks at this problem and gives us some practical tips to use with our patients. Be sure to look at Getting More Daily Lifestyle Activity, and print out the guidelines for your patients.

Two articles worth reading this week both cover some benefits of metformin beyond its anti-diabetic properties: Metformin May Slow Aging Process and Metformin May Delay Aging and Cancer Progression.
