Letter from the Editor #612: Diet Sodas, Good or Bad?

An article in Science Daily this week caught my eye. According to a new study there is a potential link between daily consumption of diet soft drinks and the risk of vascular events. Individuals who drink diet soft drinks on a daily basis may be at increased risk of suffering vascular events such as stroke, heart attack, and vascular death. Although the authors could show some small increase was evident there was no comparison of how the possibility of consuming less corn syrup and sugar may reduce the severity of diabetes and the associated vascular complications. They had decided to only print part of the story focusing on sugar free drinks and the harm these might cause without looking at the benefits that might occur.

Some of those benefits are evident when we look at this week’s Item #11 which discusses how fructose can activate the taste buds of the pancreas and how the corn syrup used in most sugary drinks is causing harm. But all this discussion may be for naught if you consider that 42% of all Americans consider Ice Cream and Cookies healthy foods, especially if they are organic or naturally made.

In the current climate of escalating obesity rates, artificially sweetened soft drinks are marketed as healthier alternatives to sugar-sweetened beverages, due to their lack of calories. However, the long-term health consequences of drinking diet soft drinks remain unclear.
