There was a lot of excitement in the lay press this week as Southern style TV Chef Paula Deen came out of the closet and admitted she has had diabetes for the last three years. It was interesting to note that this occurred after she signed a major deal with a pharmaceutical manufacturer to help spread the word about diabetes – a lot of press was released about this deal and what a mismatch it was.
As an avid home chef I tend to watch a lot of “food” shows and Paula is not the first to try to be healthier. Over the past 3-4 years many of our favorite hosts have put on a lot of pounds trying to challenge the biggest burrito, eat the biggest donut or the most wings. These same hosts have recently changed their ways and no longer look for the fattiest, sugariest, carb and calorie-laden foods they can find, and the newer chef cook-offs are focusing on quality rather than quantity. If over 70 million people watch these shows each week, then any mention of better food choices has to be a positive regardless of what the motive is.
If you are looking for some science to share about food with your patients you might want to check out Item #4, Good Carbs and Bad Carbs, or Item #8, Sucralose Does Not Affect Blood Sugar or Insulin Resistance. And finally since we are talking about obesity and diabetes it would be a wise choice to read Item #3, Drug Helps Both Patients with Diabetes and without Lose Weight.
