Depression affects up to one-fourth of adults with diabetes and has been linked to increased mortality in older diabetes patients. This study examined its association with deaths caused by heart attacks and strokes (cardiovascular disease). Researchers in the ACCORD trial, where depression screening was done regularly, found that major depression may increase the risk of cardiovascular events, thereby increasing mortality.
