Last week I was watching an episode of the show New Amsterdam and they had an ER patient who was in DKA because they couldn’t afford their insulin. The medical director made a big deal and said they would make their own. The first thing that came to my mind was a $25 bottle of regular insulin and a $25 bottle of NPH from Walmart, and how for $50 to $75 a month a patient could manage their diabetes.

When I presented this to my interns they gave me every reason why this wouldn’t work, but one intern, Adam Chalela B.S., PharmD Candidate, USF College of Pharmacy Class of 2020, brought us some information proving that the $75 treatment works.
