Therapeutic Effects of Metformin in Liver Disease

Jul 17, 2015

Researchers at McGill University Health Centre, Montreal, Canada, report that metformin has some biochemical properties effects that would suggest a benefit in treating chronic liver diseases. They searched the PubMed and Ovid MEDLINE databases from 2000 to March 2015, but were unable to find any evidence pointing to an independent role for metformin in treating liver disease. However, they did find some evidence for a chemopreventive role against hepatocellular carcinoma and recommend that patients with diabetes and chronic liver disease continue because of this effect.
