Diabetes In Control Study #15

RELAXATION – WarmFeet® study  Version II

Stress Management and Relaxation Training is SO IMPORTANT for Persons with Diabetes

Birgitta I. Rice, MS, RPh, CHES

Increasingly more research findings indicate the harmful effects of stress in our lives.  Increased levels of stress and therefore a reduced immune system response bring about 70 - 80% of common physical disorders.  Because people with diabetes may already have some limitations in their  immune system function, - relaxation can really provide some welcome benefits."

Unfortunately we cannot just take a pill to get rid of the stress – we have to use a behavioral approach to get around it.  Relaxation training -- is setting a goal for oneself to LEARN a method of slowing down the main physiological systems like breathing and heart rate.  Then, when we practice these techniques regularly, we allow our bodies to “take a time out”, allowing healing and renewal to take place.

Relaxation:

Can decrease symptoms of headache, nausea, rash and diarrhea

Will increase concentration

May increase levels of physical energy

Can lower blood pressure

Makes you less anxious

Is enjoyable with the WarmFeet® technique improves peripheral blood flow.

DiC was instrumental in making the RELAXATION – WarmFeet® study available to its readership.  There was a great response to this study.  We are now also offering it in a less labor intensive version, to benefit YOU, our dear health care professionals. We are concerned about your stress level too!

The 2nd version of the RELAXATION – WarmFeet® study is cutting out many of the earlier required measurements, concentrating mainly on change in pain levels and ulcer size (if present). So if you felt you did not have the TIME to do all the recording for the study, this Relax-WF 2nd version may be better for you,.

Requirements:

Short Patient History

Foot exam using the monofilament (provided with instructions)

Pre- and Post-Relaxation Temperatures  with instructions for patient

If ulcer present, a measurement

Pre and post patient survey

Post survey for educator

Relaxation cassette for each patient (must have cassette player available)
