Chromium Picolinate With Biotin Attenuates Elevation In Blood Glucose Levels In People With Type 2 Diabetes Ingesting

Medium Carbohydrate Nutritional Beverages

A 12-week, randomized, double-blind, controlled study was conducted to determine the effects of Chromax® chromium picolinate with biotin on blood glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes who were consuming a beverage containing 29 g of carbohydrate, twice daily.  The test and control beverages were similar in content to popular beverages designed for people with diabetes.

Thirty-four subjects with type 2 diabetes receiving stable doses of oral hypoglycemic medication were randomized to receive either a beverage with chromium picolinate (300 mcg chromium) and biotin (150 mcg; treatment group), or a beverage without chromium picolinate and biotin (control group).  Participants were asked to consume two servings of the beverages each day as a dietary supplement.  Baseline hypoglycemic medications remained stable throughout the treatment period.  Indicators of blood glucose control were assessed at baseline, during the study and at the end of study.

At the end of the study, subjects in the control group had significantly elevated HbA1c levels compared to baseline (8.8% vs. 7.7%; p<0.02), whereas the HbA1c levels in the treatment group did not significantly change (7.8% vs. 7.5%).  Fasting blood glucose levels significantly increased in the control group (176 vs. 199 mg/dL; p<0.03), but not in the treatment group (153 vs. 161 mg/dL).  Levels of fatigue also significantly worsened in the control group compared to the treatment group (p<0.006).

Results from this trial suggest that chromium picolinate and biotin can significantly reduce elevations in blood glucose levels and symptoms of fatigue in people with type 2 diabetes who are consuming a carbohydrate-containing beverage.
