Retina Camera

retinacameraimageA new optical device the size of a hand held video camera from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology can scan an entire retina in seconds. This device combines ultra high-speed 3D imaging, a tiny micro-electro mechanical systems mirror for scanning, and corrective techniques for unintentional movements in a compact size. With a technique called optical coherence tomography the device sends beams of infrared light onto the retina. Echoes of this light return to the instrument, which uses interferometry to measure changes in the time delay and magnitude of the returning echoes revealing the cross sectional tissue structure of the retina. Physicians and other health care providers can provide early detection of retinal diseases including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and macular degeneration with comparable quality to the conventional table top instruments. The device is still relatively expensive so it may take some time to get these into the clinical setting. The Optical Express, January 2014 www.osa.org
