Question 868

According to the Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, which medication class places asymptomatic patients at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and is an additional indication for diabetes screening?

Correct

Answer: C. Both A and B

Educational Critique: The use of certain medications, such as atypical antipsychotics and glucocorticoids, put patients at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Hyperglycemia, in patients with known or unknown diabetes, is a known side effect of glucocorticoid use. A recent study concluded that the use of atypical antipsychotics in older adults (>65 years) for conditions other than bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, was associated with increased initiation of antidiabetic medications.
