New Hampshire Resident Receives the American Association of Diabetes Educators 2002 Educator of the Year Award

CHICAGO, September 16, 2002- The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) announces the selection of Mary Jo Dudley, RN, BSN, CDE for its 2002 Educator of the Year Award.  Ms. Dudley received the award last month at AADE’s 29th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA. She is a diabetes program coordinator at Lamprey Health Care and the Community Health Access Network in Newmarket, NH. The award, sponsored by LifeScan, Inc., recognizes individual diabetes educators who have made special contributions to the field through dedication, innovation and sensitivity in patient care.

Dudley was singled out for her contributions to both AADE and the specialty of diabetes education and care. “Mary Jo was chosen for her long-standing commitment to the advancement of diabetes education, innovative ideas and educational tools that have benefited diabetes education and care on the local, state and national level,” said AADE Awards Committee Chair Donna Young.

In addition to her service in diabetes education and care, she helped create the Lamprey Health Care Diabetes Program funded through a U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grant.  Dudley served nine years as the program coordinator of  “Many Hats of Diabetes, ” a group diabetes education class, and was also the coordinator of the Seacoast Diabetes Institute, an educational resource for people with diabetes and their families. She co-founded a day camp for children ages 5-9 with diabetes and has also participated in the 25-mile Tour de Cure in New Hampshire to help raise funds for diabetes research. Dudley is the incoming chair of the Pregnancy and Reproductive Specialty Practice Group.

The American Association of Diabetes Educators is a multidisciplinary organization of more than 10,000 health care professionals dedicated to promoting the role of the diabetes educator and improving the quality of diabetes education and care.
