Pistachio Consumption May Lower Cholesterol

Nov 22, 2013

Pistachios are rich in protein, monounsaturated fatty acids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are also relatively low in saturated fatty acids and contain no trans fatty acids or cholesterol. And they contain resveratrol and phytochemicals, compounds that are associated with reduced risk of CVD and a few other chronic health conditions. In a review of 7 studies, London et al evaluated the effect of pistachio intake on blood lipid profile. The results of the study demonstrated that adding pistachios to a typical diet of normocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic individuals has a beneficial effect on the blood lipid profile.
