Using the

software to insure you and your patients are getting
the most current information.
Since
many patients take dietary supplements, herbal,
and nutritional products there is a great
opportunity for these botanicals to
interfere with prescriptive medicines.
Most often, your patients
do not think their choices will affect the
prescriptions that they are taking.
This
information will be of great use to you and your
patients with diabetes. For
Example:
-
Patients taking
Glipizide and Glyburide, or
insulin may often experience
hypoglycemia from the added effects of
taking Fenugreek and/or
Gymnema.
-
High
amounts of soluble guar fiber if taken
concurrently with metformin can decrease
absorption.
-
Ciprofloxin and
Ofloxcin can be bound by
Calcium, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, and
Zinc greatly reducing the
absorption of the antibiotic. The
same is true of Doxycycline.
-
Herbal teas
such as green or black tea
can impair the absorption of
theophylline, and cause breathing
difficulties.
-
Soy can
interfere with thyroid hormones and
decrease absorption. Concurrent consumption is
not recommended. Bungle weed and
lemon balm can have the same
effect.
