Oftentimes patients are told, “We can give you a pill or a shot for your diabetes, and they do the same thing.” You know that they are referring to GLP-1 analogs and DPP-4 inhibitors. Since these medications have similar effects, this comparison often happens. However, this is not even close to being the truth. Simply said GLP-1 analogs replace a depleted hormone, and DPP-4 inhibitors try to save a little of what is depleted. That is why the analog does so many more things than the inhibitor.
