Rx
compliance among seniors eroding due to costs, study finds.
WASHINGTON
- September 11, 2002 - The rising cost of prescription drugs
is affecting some older patients’ compliance with their
pharmaceutical regimens, according to a new survey from the Kaiser
Family Foundation and the Commonwealth Fund.
Of
seniors polled, 22 percent said they avoided filling a
prescription last year, or skipped doses to make them last longer
because of cost considerations. And 31 percent of patients with
serious and chronic conditions were found to be non-compliant.
"Not
surprisingly, more seniors without drug coverage [35 percent]
skipped doses or did not have prescriptions filled," noted
Kaiser and Commonwealth.
Twenty-three
percent of all seniors in the states surveyed spent more than $100
per month on prescriptions.
