New Liver Insulin: HDV-Insulin

There is a new insulin that doesn’t work like other insulins.  It works on the liver to prevent Glucagon from being secreted so it doesn’t cause hypoglycemia.

This new insuliun preparation reduces after-meal blood glucose values in people with diabetes without causing hypoglycemia.  The new preparation is a hepatic directed vesicle-insulin.  Researchers at Vanderbilt University are hoping to prove that is is more suitable than Regular insulin for aggressive therapy.

In the September/October issue of the Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications, head researcher Dr. Stephen Davis call the advantage of HDV-insulin “two-fold”’ saying that insulin directed at the liver should suppress the output of glucose by that organ while increasing its ability to metabolize glucose.  They also found that improved post-meal blood glucose levels can be obtained with reduced insulin circulating in the bloodstream.

It was noted, that by adding a molecule that targets the liver to a soluble pouch designed to deliver insulin created HPV-insulin.  The effects of a single injection of HDV-insulin or Regular insulin administered 30 minutes before a 75-gm oral glucose tolerance test in nine patients with type 1 diabetes were observed.  Each subject received the opposite type of insulin an identical protocol four weeks later.

HDV-insulin lowered glucose levels 39.6mg/dl during the test compared with Regular insulin.  Plasma levels of insulin and glucagons were equivalent during both series of experiments.
