FDA OKs Teveten for Hypertension

U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved  Teveten HCT drug used to treat hypertension.

Teveten HCT is a combination of the angiotensin II receptor blocker called eprosartan mesylate, used to treat high blood pressure, and the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide.

"Most patients with high blood pressure, regardless of age, race, gender or severity of hypertension, respond to Teveten," said Eugene Melnyk, Biovail's chairman and chief executive. "With the availability of Teveten HCT in two dosing strengths, Biovail is offering physicians the flexibility to provide their patients with additional control."

Biovail said earlier this month that the FDA had approved its new version of Cardizem to treat high blood pressure. Biovail will launch Cardizem LA -- long acting -- on April 2.

Teveten® (eprosartan mesylate) is indicated for the treatment of hypertension. Teveten® blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor found in many tissues (e.g., vascular smooth muscle, adrenal gland). Teveten® belongs to a class of antihypertensive drugs known as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs).

USE IN PREGNANCY: When used in pregnancy during the second and third trimesters, drugs that act directly on the renin angiotensin system can cause injury and even death to the developing fetus. For important information about Teveten®, please see Prescribing Information or visit the Teveten® website.
