Diabetes Book Review

Dave Joffe, Pharmacist, FACA

Editor in Chief

by Alan L. Rubin M.D.

I have often walked by the “for dummies” books and thought “I am to smart to read a book for dummies.”

I picked up the Diabetes for Dummies book because my son, Jason, found it on the shelf at Borders one night and being a smart 14 year old he said “ Dad, this book was written for you, it even has your name on it (dummy).” To humor him I took a look and realized that the popularity of the dummies series could probably cause a few of my patients to feel comfortable reading it.

Diabetes for Dummies has the friendly, quirky style you expect from all the For Dummies books, but this is no skim-the-surface Diabetes 101. Rubin has packed this book with useful information, peppered with warm advice for enjoying your life while living with diabetes. One of his points well mirrors my own, although you'd rather not have this disease, you're lucky to have it now instead of a few decades ago, because today you can manage diabetes and live a productive, quality-filled life.

The book is divided into sections on "Dealing with the Onset of Diabetes," "How Diabetes Affects Your Body," "Managing Diabetes: The 'Thriving with Diabetes' Lifestyle Plan," and "Special Considerations for Living with Diabetes." Each chapter is packed with facts and strategies on topics such as monitoring, battling complications, medications, diet, and exercise.  There is not a whole lot of new information here, it’s just a great book for reinforcing the things we try to teach our patients every day.

The book is just quirky enough that your patients will read it and you might find yourself using some of his tag lines and explanations with your patients.

Dr. Rubin is a graduate of New York University School of Medicine and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism. He has been in practice in San Francisco since 1973 when he completed advanced studies at the University of California in San Francisco. He is a member of the Professional Section of the American Diabetes Association and the Endocrine Society
