New GLP-1 Medication: Starting Low and Going Slow

Nausea is a common side effect of GLP-1 therapy. Recently a few of my patients took the recommended low starting dose, but got so nauseated they refused treatment beyond that. From this, I’ve learned to start my patients on half the low dose of the daily or twice daily GLP-1’s to prevent untoward effects, allowing their bodies to accept it more gradually, and then move up slowly to the dose they need to manage their condition. So far, the patients I’ve done this with have done well….

Lesson Learned:

Not a new message…start low and go slow can help many patients adjust and adhere to treatment.
