Abbott Laboratories Inc. said on Monday it has received U.S. regulatory approval for a blood glucose monitor that uses a very small blood sample, reducing the pain of testing by diabetics. Abbott’s diabetes unit said the new system measures glucose levels using the smallest sample size required of any blood glucose monitoring product on the market. The new monitor has a large display, has finger-to-palm equivalency-providing accurate results during rapid glucose changes. It has a large display, 5-second wait time and 4 programmable programs. Still under review by U.S. regulators is a potentially bigger product for Abbott, a continuous blood glucose monitoring system called FreeStyle Navigator. That device uses a patch, avoiding painful finger sticks, to monitor glucose levels continuously. That product could be approved as early as the second quarter of 2006.
