Millions of Americans Require Intervention for Obesity

According to a new study using data from the 2007 – 2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 140 million American adults should be considering behavioral weight-loss treatment, and 116 million of those are also candidates for pharmacotherapy. Of those recommended for both behavioral treatment and pharmacotherapy, 32 million may be candidates for bariatric surgery. Researchers based their data for estimating the proportion of adults in the United States recommended for treatment on The Obesity Society, The American Heart Association and The American College of Cardiology Guidelines (2013) for Managing Overweight and Obesity in Adults, released in November 2013. Presented at the The Obesity Society, Oct 2014
