Letter From the Editor, Sept. 19, 2015

Sep 21, 2015

daveIt seems like every time we get good news about a diabetes drug, the bad has to surface. This week, Lilly and BI announced some great heart results with their drug Jardiance, while the FDA tightened up its warning on Invokana and fracture risk. The same thing happens in other disease states as well. We all know how diuretics affect glucose levels, but now a study shows that if you mix a potassium sparing diuretic with HCTZ it does not seem to have a detrimental effect. To find out which diuretic that is, check out Item #1.

It could be that for many patients if you pick the right ARB you might not even need a diuretic. This was discussed a couple of weeks ago in our clinical text and now to help you select the best ARB for your patients, our PharmD Candidate, Ashley Garringer, from USF College of Pharmacy, has prepared a table that “Rates the ARB’s.”

And for many we are in the Dog Days of Summer, when the temperature is high and patients are outdoors more often. Most of us tell our patients to consume extra liquids, but our fitness guru Dr. Sheri Colberg had a different take on how much fluids our patients consume and the underestimated risk of hyponatremia.
