This past week, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that federal exchanges for the Affordable Care Act were in accordance with the guidelines of the Act and millions of patients will be able to still have healthcare that otherwise would be left out. It has been an interesting couple of months while the high court debated on the issue and nowhere were the effects easier to see than in the pharmacy.

Insulin-using patients have been trying to get as much medication and supplies as possible, fearing that they might no longer be able to fill their prescriptions. To bring a little more importance to the value of the Supreme Court decision take a look at Item #11 which examines how the expansion of Medicaid in certain states has improved diabetes outcomes and decreased emergency costs.

Another way to reduce emergency room costs is to reduce falls, especially in older patients. This week Dr. Sheri Colberg takes another look at the best ways to keep your older diabetes patients from falling
