Letter from the Editor, #761

This is the time of year when our patients start to think about their New Year’s resolutions and taking care of their diabetes is one of the things they often decide on. Unfortunately, this is usually used as an excuse to gorge themselves for the rest of the year because it will be better in 2015. It is a good thing that the FDA just approved Saxenda to help these patients stick to their targets.

It also appears that the EU is willing to approve medications for diabetes faster than the FDA as they have just approved Xultophy, the first injectable medication that mixes two different classes of diabetes medications. In fact, one of these has not even been approved for use in the U.S.

One of the hottest selling diet books over the last 15 years has been Eat Right for Your Type, a book based on maximizing weight loss based on your blood type. If you take a look at this week’s Item 4, you will find information from Diabetologia, published online on December 18th, that shows your risk of diabetes can also be influenced by your blood type.

Happy Holidays!
