Letter from the Editor #746

Sep 13, 2014

This week we have an item about the increased use of gastric sleeve for weight reduction and the reversal of diabetes. This newer procedure is actually becoming preferred for overweight patients. Although this may sound like a similar device to a Lap Band it is actually a significant surgery where the lower part of the stomach is removed and a sleeve about the diameter of the esophagus is all that is left. When looking at the pictures and techniques used for this procedure it is apparent that sleeving is much more complex and invasive than Lap Band. While we are on the subject of weight loss it you may want to check out Item #4 and learn about the newly approved medication Bupropion/Naltrexone (Contrave).

We have had a lot of response to the new Diabetes in Control PreDiabetes Screening Test kit and this week our first three items will give you a good idea as to why all your diabetes patient’s family members should take the test .

With a day packed full of education, motivational tools, one-on-one sessions, and workshops, the TCOYD health fair is a great way to get your patients to take better care of their health and themselves.
