Letter from the Editor, #674

This week there is a new report out on the increased spending per year for diabetes care. This number is now well over 240 billion dollars, and when you add that to the 140 billion dollars we spend on hypertension we are now at almost 400 billion for the two diseases. This is eight times what the sequester is for 2013.

Imagine this, we decrease total costs by one-half of one percent simply by treating more aggressively and earlier, and presto all the airport delays are gone.

To help make this possible AACE has released new comprehensive guidelines for the treatment of diabetes and for the first time ever, prediabetes patients. Check out this week’s Item #1 and the Tool for Your Practice to download the guidelines.
