Letter from the Editor #499

Dec 13, 2009

Steve, Andrew and I just spent three informative days in Las Vegas at the mid-year sessions of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. There was a lot of information about the use of insulin in the hospital and how to avoid the pitfalls of hypoglycemia. There were numerous talks and posters on the move from sliding scale therapy to basal-bolus management, and finally it appears hospitals are beginning to realize the value of pharmacists as managers of insulin therapy. There were some new devices for proper dosing of insulin and Eli Lilly announced the introduction of a new 3ml(300 unit) vial for their Humalog insulin.

Feeling dizzy, exhausted, thirsty and running to the bathroom all the time was how Zippora Karz of the world famous New York City Ballet felt before she was diagnosed with diabetes. Recently she wrote a book about the misdiagnosis, misconceptions and troubles she had. Our current intern, Reina Natero, University of Florida PharmD Candidate 2010, discusses the reasons this book is a good fit for a lot of your patients in her review of The Sugarless Plum.
