Joseph Houmard, PhD: The Benefits of Doing a Little Exercise Every Day

Dr. Joe Houmard talks about how, if we all began working on “weight maintenance” immediately after leaving high school, it would reduce our national health care expenditure phenomenonally. Instead, the focus is on “weight loss” rather than healthy, gradual physical fitness.

Joe Houmard, Ph.D. has been at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC since 1988. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Exercise & Sport Science and Director of the Human Performance Laboratory. He is an author on more than 150 scientific papers and book chapters and has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for his research. Dr. Houmard’s research focuses on skeletal muscle metabolism and how it is altered with conditions such as aging, insulin, resistance, and obesity and how interventions such as weight loss and exercise exert their positive effects.
