Joseph Hourmard talks about the benefits of aerobic exercise versus anaerobic exercise, and notes that as patients get older, doing more resistance-type exercise will help to maintain muscle mass. However, he again points out that the best exercise is the type that patients will actually do. He also notes that there is still a lot to be learned about the benefits and effects of exercise for those with diabetes.
Joe Houmard, Ph.D. has been at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC since 1988. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Exercise & Sport Science and Director of the Human Performance Laboratory. He is an author on more than 150 scientific papers and book chapters and has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for his research. Dr. Houmard’s research focuses on skeletal muscle metabolism and how it is altered with conditions such as aging, insulin, resistance, and obesity and how interventions such as weight loss and exercise exert their positive effects.
