From the Editors Desk:
Dave Joffe, Editor in Chief

This past Friday a woman came into the pharmacy with prescriptions for Humalog 75/25, and a glucose meter and strips. She had been in the hospital and was diagnosed with a blood glucose of 875.

I asked her what her A1c was and she did not know. I asked her if they showed her how to inject her insulin and she said no. I asked her if they showed her how to operate her monitor and she said no. I asked her how often they told her to monitor and she said “a couple of times a day.” I then asked if she had been scheduled to receive diabetes education and she said, “no what is that?”

She informed me that her doctor had told her to take her readings a couple of times a day, and if it was over 300 to call him. Otherwise he would see her in 30 days.

Her husband told me that they had insurance and wanted to know why no one at the hospital had told them these things.

I helped them to learn about the Insulin, the monitor and informed them that they were entitled to education and they had a right to demand it.

As they left after 30 minutes I felt great about helping them but I soon realized how much better a job we all need to do to educate our medical colleagues on the benefits of education and self-management. Check out Item 11 to examine the results of education's benefit.
