Diabetes Increases Risk of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Pulmonary Fibrosis Added to list of diseases those with diabetes are at increased risk for.

Results of a study published in the June issue of Chest suggest that diabetes mellitus may be a risk factor for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Dr. Tatsuji Enomoto of Nippon Medical School in Tokyo and colleagues conducted a case-control study of 65 consecutive patients hospitalized with IPF and 184 controls to determine whether diabetes influences the initiation or progression of IPF
The team reviewed information on age, sex, smoking history, and results of physical examinations, blood examinations, and lung function tests.

A total of 84.6% of patients were ever-smokers, compared with 50.5% of controls. Diabetes was diagnosed in 32.7% of patients and 11.4% of controls. A history of smoking and diabetes were both associated with a significantly increased prevalence of IPF (adjusted odds ratios 5.40 and 4.06, respectively).

When the researchers looked at differences between IPF patients with and without diabetes, Dr. Enomoto and colleagues found that "only fasting blood sugar (145.6 g/dL versus 92.0 g/dL) and HbA1c (6.26% versus 5.32%), respectively, were different between the two groups."

Although the team's results support the hypothesis that diabetes increases the risk of IPF, the reasons for this association are "unclear," they acknowledge, calling for further large-scale studies to clarify the connection. Chest 2003; 123:2007-2011
