Microalbuminuria Associated With Low Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Type 2

Microalbuminuria, a possible risk factor for cardiovascular disease, is associated with low polyunsaturated fatty acid content in the serum triglyceride fraction of type 2 diabetic patients.

This may also contribute to the progression of renal disease.  That, suggested by investigators from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil

The investigators studied 37 normoalbuminuric and 35 microalbuminuric patients with type 2 diabetes who had been on a standardized diet for four weeks. Fatty acid composition of the serum phospholipid, triglyceride and cholesterol ester fractions was measured using gas chromatography.

Total cholesterol and triglycerides were determined using enzymatic-colorimetric methods. High-density lipoprotein- (HDL-) cholesterol was measured by double precipitation, and apolipoprotein B was measured by immunoturbidimetry.

Results showed a lower proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the triglyceride fraction of microalbuminuric patients compared with normoalbuminuric patients.

While saturated fatty acids also appeared higher in the triglyceride fractions of patients with microalbuminuria, logistic regression analysis showed that only the polyunsaturated fatty acid proportion was significantly associated with microalbuminuria.

Total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and apolipoprotein B levels were similar between normoalbuminuric and microalbuminuric patients.
