WASHINGTON
— the Food and Drug Administration's announced new guidelines to speed
treatments for cancer, obesity and diabetes.
Worried
about a serious slowdown in the creation of novel drugs, the government is
taking steps it hopes will speed medical innovation, largely by making
clearer how companies can prove a new product works before they waste time
researching the wrong thing. The
main issue isn't how quickly FDA scientists review treatments — that has
sped up greatly in recent years — but the time it takes to research and
develop new medications and medical devices.
New guidelines issued yesterday say a test
for inflammation in blood vessels may help doctors decide whether patients
who have other risk factors for a heart attack or stroke need preventive
treatment.
