FDA Clears Over-the-Counter Blood-Glucose Test for Diabetics

WASHINGTON - A test that monitors blood glucose levels in diabetics can now be sold over-the-counter, the US Food and Drug Administrration (FDA) said on Tuesday. The FDA announced it cleared nonprescription sales of the test, called A1c Now.  Made by privately held Metrika, Inc., of Sunnyvale, California, the test measures blood levels of glycated hemoglobin. The test helps patients and doctors monitor blood-glucose levels over time, as opposed to other tests available over-the-counter that take an instant "snapshot" of these levels.  The glycated hemoglobin readings tell patients what their average blood-glucose level was over the past 90 to 120 days, according to the FDA.
