Clears Over-the-Counter Blood-Glucose Test for Diabetics
WASHINGTON
- A test that monitors blood glucose levels in diabetics can now be sold
over-the-counter, the US Food and Drug Administrration (FDA) said on
Tuesday. The FDA announced it cleared nonprescription sales of the test,
called A1c Now. Made by privately held Metrika, Inc., of Sunnyvale,
California, the test measures blood levels of glycated hemoglobin. The test
helps patients and doctors monitor blood-glucose levels over time, as
opposed to other tests available over-the-counter that take an instant
"snapshot" of these levels. The glycated hemoglobin readings
tell patients what their average blood-glucose level was over the past 90 to
120 days, according to the FDA. Click Here

Signs Historic Bill for Diabetes Research:
Washington, DC,
December 18, 2002 — U.S. President George W. Bush yesterday signed
into law H.R. 5738, a landmark bill that will substantially increase and
extend funding for the federal Special
Diabetes Program. The
bill provides $750 million over five years for type 1 diabetes research,
as well as an additional $750 million for diabetes treatment and
prevention programs for Native American populations.
