The Editor's Desk:
The
response to our feature on a possible cure continues to cause interest.
Over the first 2 weeks the feature has been read by over 54,000
people. We appreciate all our readers sharing this with others.
Part
3 overviews Proctor
and Gamble’s reason for working with McGill
University, EVMS,
and GMP on the INGAP program
and Dr. Vinik shares his insight with new information.
We
have located some information on a surgical procedure from 1930 that Dr.
Rosenberg spoke about. This information, from an article by G. DeTAKATS,
M.D., M.S., F.A.C.S., THE
EFFECT OF LIGATING THE TAIL OF THE PANCREAS IN JUVENILE DIABETES
was published in Surg Gynecol Obst 53:45-5 in 1931.
The INGAP peptide could be the answer for the regeneration of
islets and why the surgical procedure was considered a success.
“Tools
for Your Practice” We
all speak to our patients
about the possibility of Diabetic Retinopathy, but are you familiar with
diabetic
maculopathy?
This is the most common cause of decreased vision in patients
with background or non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy. We have
prepared a handout for you to help explain this to your patients.
This
weeks overview: Item
#4 lets us know about another treatment option for painful
neuropathy. Find out in item #7
why metformin may not be the best treatment for those with PCOS.
Then Item#11
picks up on the controversy that high carbs and low fat can help you
lose weight. The presence of certain antibodies can tell us our risk for
developing type 1 diabetes in Item#15.
We
have the results from the Pritchett & Hull Feedback Study
completed by your peers. The results show overwhelmingly that your
colleagues feel that P-H handouts are great.
