UPDATE:  Court Denies Class Action Status of Rezulin Lawsuits

Pfizer Inc said New York district court denied a proposed class certification of federal litigation involving its prescription diabetes drug Rezulin.

The court's ruling applies to certain federal lawsuits that now involves more than 4,000 patients whose diabetes had been treated with Rezulin.  Judge Kaplan said: "Even plaintiffs experts agree that the controlled clinical studies of the drug Rezulin demonstrate that the vast majority of patients who were treated with Rezulin tolerated the drug well and had no elevated liver enzymes and had no liver injury as a result of the drug."  Kaplan also ruled against a claim for special medical monitoring for patients who formerly took the drug. Last November, a Virginia court denied certification to a similar lawsuit.
