How to Answer Your Patient’s Medicare Questions using SHIPS!

AS THE government has increased Medicare choices, Medicare has become more and more complex. Luckily, the federal government also supplies a source of advice: the State Health Insurance Counseling and Assistance Programs, called the SHIP programs. GlucoWatch”® Approved by FDA for Children, Adolescents

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said last Tuesday that it has approved Cygnus Inc.'s GlucoWatch Biographer, a noninvasive blood glucose monitoring device worn like a watch, for use in children and adolescents with diabetes.

The FDA said that the approval was based on the results of a 66-patient study showing the GlucoWatch to be safe and effective in type I diabetics aged 7 to 17. Cygnus and Sankyo are currently working on an enhanced version of the device, with the goal of developing the technology as a replacement for finger-stick tests.

NEWS FLASH UPDATE:   The Case Against High Fat Diets
In the Sunday, July 7 issue of the "New York Times Magazine", science writer Gary Taubes questioned whether the long-standing public health support for low-fat diets was wrong. Taubes suggested that the Atkins diet -- a low-carbohydrate, high-fat approach permitting nearly unlimited portions of fatty meats but only small amounts of vegetables and virtually no fruit, grains or milk products -- might be healthier and more effective for weight loss. In this comprehensive and detailed rebuttal to Taubes, "Washington Post" staff writer Sally Squires makes a compelling case for the value and benefits of following a low to moderate fat eating plan.
