Weeks Newsletter

From the Editors
Desk:
During the past 2 months I have
been preparing to take the CDE exam. I have been reviewing the
Core Curriculum, and have found many great facts that I seemed to
have forgotten. It makes one realize how fast things are changing
and how we have to work extra hard to share what we learn with our
patients without overwhelming them.
I am excited to offer this
week’s “Tools” for your practice. This “Action
Plan” for your patients will cause them to make their
own commitment to diabetes care.
Marilyn Porter brings us very important
information if you are educating children. Diabetes is taught by
healthcare professionals rather than certified teachers, it is
important to review various aspects relative to teaching and
learning, even though the information may be disseminated by
diabetes “educators”.

Breaking News Flash:
Does
the Fasting Blood Glucose Level Predict the Post-meal Glucose
Excursion?
In
a presentation to be released this week in Chicago at the American
Association of Clinical Endocrinologists 11th Annual
meeting they will announce the results of a study that shows
postprandial hyperglycemia is a major clinical challenge in type 2
diabetes. The study
concludes that the fasting blood glucose level predicts the
post-meal glucose rise.
The pre-meal glucose level accounts for 50 percent of the
post-meal excursion in subjects with non-insulin –dependent type 2
diabetes. In order to
improve overall glycemic control, fasting hyperglycemia should be
corrected before starting specific treatment for postprandial
hyperglycemia.

WASHINGTON, April
26 —
GlaxoSmithKline and Eli Lilly & Company have added warnings
about heart and liver risks to the labels of their diabetes drugs,
which are similar to a medication that was withdrawn from the market
in 2000 because of links to fatal liver damage. See

The Patient Experience Program – We
have over 50 educators and 500 patients registered for the
study. We still need 8
more educators who can provide 10 patients for the study. The
Patient Experience Program (PEP) seeks to bridge research and
educational programs to healthcare professionals, patients and their
families through a collaborative effort to promote public health and
to help people with Type 2 diabetes improve their quality of
life.

“There
is no drug in current or prospective use that holds as much as
promise for a life of extended vitality as does physical
exercise.
Why reward the stockholders of Merck and Johnson and Johnson
when we know that exercise is better for you and infinitely
cheaper?" ”
