899GymIncentiveIn a current study, participants were promised a monetary incentive for going to the gym three times a week.  They all said they planned to meet the requirement, but by the end of the study only one-third had done so. People given an incentive made 0.14 more visits to the gym each week than those who did not receive an incentive, according to the report. New gym members, who intended to visit the gym three times per week, only ended up averaging one weekly visit by the end of the study. What was thought to be a sure way to get people to exercise was offering them a $60 dollar Amazon gift card if new gym members visited the gym just nine times during the first six weeks they’d joined. The results of the study show that financial incentives alone may not be the answer to get people to change lifestyles. — July 2017 National Bureau of Economic Research
