Letter from the Editor #493

Remember that DPPS trial that was completed years ago, and showed that modest lifestyle changes could prevent the onset of diabetes? Now an extention of that study, the DPPOS, has proven that A Decade Later, Lifestyle Changes or Metformin Still Lower Type 2 Diabetes Risk. In fact this extension showed that participants in the lifestyle changes group delayed Type 2 diabetes by about four years compared with placebo, and those in the metformin group delayed it by two years according to David M. Nathan, M.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital. These new study results, released only 4 days ago by the NDDK and NIH are available to you by clicking here.

Speaking of lifestyle interventions it seems like every week there is something written and published that indicates doing the right thing is wrong. We all have had patients come to us and say, "I read an article in a magazine, and I might have a heart attack if my A1c is as low as you want it." Now it appears that physical activity is under attack. We went to our Activity Guru, Sheri Colberg, Ph.D., FACSM, when one of my patients told me about the Time magazine cover story from the August 17, 2009, issue titled, "The Myth about Exercise." Dr. Colberg wanted to help you set the record straight with your patients about exercise. Please read her feature Is It Really True that Exercise Won’t Make You Lose Weight?
