Julia Leszko, United States Women’s Epee Fencing Champion

Sent us the following note:(edited)

I am writing this to let you know what is going on. Thank-you for taking the time and space to share the information on me and my fencing in the Diabetes in Control website. A former colleague of mine has contacted me as a result of that article and we are keeping in touch as a result.

I have a website that you may already know about: www.julialeszko.com.

In the world of fencing, I have a big US event the 1st weekend in December coming up in Columbus, OH.

I finished last season at the world championships in Lisbon, Portugal in August. Worlds was not a good event for me, a two day event, I didn't make it to the 2nd day unfortunately.

What is normal for me is to take breaks from training and for some unwise reason, I haven't. Having reached a point of fatigue this month, I won't be doing anything fencing related for 3 weeks.

I still the number 1 spot in the US rankings (see) http://julialeszko.com/achievements.htm

I have done quite a few fencing demonstrations (for children with diabetes camps, renaissance festivals) in the last couple of months and I really enjoy people's interest in this sport. Many people are intrigued and would love to have more experiences with fencing. I believe the lack of media coverage has left fencing as a more obscure sport.

If I can help you or Diabetes in Control, please let me know how. I find the weekly updates from Diabetes in Control very helpful in keeping me current with the newest practice and product information, especially now since my practice area (IV infusion and drug info writing) is limited in coming across new oral medications and patients with diabetes.

Thank you for your help, Dave, and I look forward to talking with you soon!

For those of you who may not have seen the original article.

Julia Leszko, United States Women’s Epee Fencing Champion, was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 7 years old. Julia was at a water park with her family and kept using the restroom all day. They took her to the doctor and she spent the next week in the hospital getting her blood glucose stabilized. Julia Graduated from Ohio State with a degree in pharmacy, and is currently ranked number 1 in the US. Her next goal is to qualify and medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
