61st scientific session has something for everyone.

The 61st scientific session delivered an enormous amount of information to us.

There were papers, posters, and oral presentations that gave us the latest updates on research into a cure, new methods of identifying and treating type 2 diabetes, new devices and methods for type 1 diabetes, as well as forward looking research.

We were especially impressed by the availability of all the presenters for interviews and informational sessions.

Below you will find a sampling of the important studies and interviews and we will be delivering more information in future newsletters. In addition as we receive permission we will either post the entire article or offer you a link to receive further information.

Many of us read articles all year long and have developed our own thoughts on how increased glucose levels and certain physical conditions can affect our patients. It was especially important to hear and see the research presented.

The University of Virginia presented a study showing how short term spikes of hyperglycemia can slow brain function in type 1 patients.

A University of Southern California study explains the mechanism of abdominal fat leading to insulin resistance.

Dr. Jay Skyler from the University of Miami brought the latest news on the DPT-1 (Diabetes Prevention Trial ) and the current results.

There was a symposium presented on Obesity and Children—Are overweight kids the next CVD Epidemic? This presentation focused on the increased incidence of type 2 diabetes in children and the future of CVD.

Fore the research minded there were multiple sessions on Islet Cell Production and Implantation.

There were multiple product presentations including new testing devices, insulin delivery systems and treatments for hypoglycemia, and neuropathy.

We had a chance to interview Professor Sir George Alberti, PRCP, the current president of the International Diabetes Federation. His insight into diabetes care around the world was very enlightening and will be featured in next week’s newsletter.
