Exposure to Staph Toxins May Cause Type 2 Diabetes

Researchers have found that weight gain puts people at an increased risk of being colonized by staphylococcus aureus bacteria on their skin. A toxin released by the bacteria has also been connected with symptoms of type 2 diabetes. The researchers examined four diabetes patients and discovered that their estimated exposure to staph toxins was similar to that of rabbits exposed to the staph toxins repeatedly who went on to develop insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and other type 2 diabetes symptoms. journal mBio, June 2015
