Equine Impact of Human Obesity

One impact of the obesity epidemic is that people are now too fat to ride horses. A third of recreational riders are too heavy for their beasts of burden, and are giving the animals health problems including lameness and back pain. The rotundness of their riders may also be leading to behavioral issues such as bucking and rearing. "People tend to think horses are such big animals so they must be OK," said one of the study’s authors, Hayley Randle. "But the health impact can be quite extreme, quite quickly." Journal of Veterinary Behavior, March 2013
